Antique Anglo-Indian Hand-Carved Hardwood Side Table, Circa 1870

SKU: 3438

A remarkable example of Victorian-era Anglo-Indian craftsmanship, this circa 1870 occasional table combines the architectural language of British furniture with the extraordinary carving traditions of India. The deeply carved tabletop centers on a courtly scene of a noble figure reclining beneath a pavilion, surrounded by attendants, while elephants, birds, and scrolling foliage fill the surrounding borders. Hand-carved caryatid figures support the apron, flowing into ornate baluster columns and scalloped arches enriched with rosettes and foliate detail. A lower gallery shelf and sculpted claw-and-ball feet complete the elaborate structure. Crafted from dense hardwood with a rich aged patina, the table retains its original character and includes a fitted glass top to protect the remarkable carving.

Provenance

Acquired from Michael Teller-Smollet, London, and documented on a Cadogan Tate commercial invoice dated June 18, 2003, identifying the piece as an antique Indian side table dating to circa 1870.
