Richly carved from solid hardwood, this unusual Chinese architectural fragment takes the form of a traditional four-legged ritual altar or ding. A guardian lion clutching a ball crowns the composition, symbolizing strength and protection, while deeply carved bands incorporate key-fret borders, scrolling foliage, and the auspicious bat motif associated with good fortune. Narrative panels depict figures beneath a tiled pagoda roof alongside dynamic martial scenes, while blooming lotus and peony forms bring additional wishes for purity and prosperity. Four substantial legs terminate in fierce beast masks and animal-paw feet, adding a distinctly protective character. Warm honey-brown patina, natural drying splits, and visible hand-carving marks reveal the age and craftsmanship of this remarkable piece.
