Reflecting the refined woodworking traditions of Damascus, this circa 1890 Syrian side table combines richly figured walnut with intricate geometric carving and luminous mother-of-pearl inlay. The square top is decorated with finely executed chip-carving and scrolling Arabesque motifs, punctuated by multi-pointed nacre stars that catch the light beautifully. A fitted glass top protects the delicate surface while keeping its craftsmanship fully visible. Beneath the tabletop, a discreet all-wood drawer provides useful storage, while the deep apron features graceful Mashrabiya-inspired openwork with scalloped arches. Four turned spindle legs complete the architectural design, recalling the decorative vocabulary of the late Ottoman period. Warm patina, carefully preserved carving, and intact inlay give this table a distinctive sense of age and Damascus craftsmanship.
Acquired through Michael Telfer-Smollet, London, as documented by a Cadogan Tate commercial invoice dated June 18, 2003, identifying the piece as an antique Syrian carved wood table dating to circa 1890.
