Carved in high relief from a substantial block of hardwood, this 18th-century South Indian architectural fragment originally formed part of a ceremonial temple chariot, or ratha. The panel depicts the Hindu goddess Devi standing in an elaborate tiered crown, pleated garments, and traditional jewelry, elevated upon a richly carved geometric and floral base. Original protruding tenons and pinholes remain at the top and bottom, preserving evidence of its architectural construction and former placement. The hand-planed reverse reveals deep wood grain, natural checking, and the character of timber weathered through years of outdoor festival use. Warm honey-brown patina and historic surface wear further enhance this remarkable example of Indian religious and architectural craftsmanship.
