This exceptional antique Chinese architectural panel is carved as an unrolled celebratory scroll, combining sculptural form with literary and symbolic meaning. The central field features a dark lacquer ground with high-relief Chinese calligraphy richly highlighted in gold leaf, reading “Dwell in Benevolence” (居仁), an idiom from Mencius expressing ideals of virtue and moral cultivation within the household. Flanking inscriptions include a dedication to a scholar named Yang Shi’e and a traditional blessing invoking the carp leaping through the Dragon Gate, symbolizing perseverance and transformative success. Flowing wave-carved borders frame the composition, while red-lacquered ends feature bamboo motifs representing resilience and integrity. The reverse shows untreated softwood planks with age patina, tool marks, and an original fiber hanging cord.
