Handcrafted from hide stretched over a carved wooden framework, this imposing Maasai warrior’s shield reflects the enduring material traditions of East Africa. Traditionally carried for both protection and ceremonial display, Maasai shields were shaped from carefully prepared animal hide and strengthened with a central wooden spine and hand-lashed construction. Its convex surface is decorated in earthy red ochre, cream, terracotta, and charcoal, arranged in bold geometric divisions that give the shield its distinctive visual rhythm. Dense whipstitching reinforces the perimeter, while contrasting leather loops secure the central rib. The reverse reveals the shield’s rugged construction, including its carved wooden grip and heavily reinforced handguard. Natural scuffs, pigment variation, and weathered hide contribute to its authentic character and age.
