Alive with the symbolic imagery of Himalayan Buddhist art, this monumental painted door panel transforms a functional architectural element into a powerful expression of spiritual belief and craftsmanship. Set against a rich red ground, a pair of stylized tigers stride through swirling clouds, embodying strength, guardianship, and courage. Above them appears the Endless Knot, one of Buddhism’s most revered auspicious symbols, representing the interconnected nature of wisdom, compassion, and existence. Decorative borders enriched with Double Vajra motifs further reinforce themes of protection and spiritual stability. Retaining its original pivot dowel from its working life, the panel preserves both the artistic splendor and sacred architectural traditions of the Tibetan cultural world.
Clayton remembers finding this Tibetan painted door panel among some of the last examples he could locate in the region. “There was an area in China where there were tigers—in fact, there was one gorge called Leaping Tiger Gorge.” The powerful tiger imagery gives the panel a wonderful connection to that landscape and its history. “This was one of the last ones, and one of the better ones we could find. I don’t think you’ll see another one quite like this.”
