Hand-Carved Songye Kifwebe Female Spirit Mask (Kifwebe Bakashi)

SKU: 3434

Bold geometric patterning and rhythmic carved striations define this striking Songye Kifwebe mask from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Traditionally associated with the bwadi bwa kifwebe society, these masks were worn during important communal and ceremonial performances, with female forms known for their connection to benevolent spiritual forces, lineage, and healing. The mask’s low forehead ridge and absence of a pronounced central crest identify it as a female-type Kifwebe bakashi. Deeply incised grooves cover the ochre-toned wood, while dark pigments emphasize the architectural eyes, strong nasal ridge, and projecting mouth. The hollowed reverse preserves hand-hewn adze marks, natural patina, and attachment holes once used for woven fiber costume elements.
