Reflecting the close relationship between agriculture and spiritual devotion in Northern Thailand and Burma, this lacquered bamboo storage vessel was created to safeguard a household’s most essential resource—its rice supply. Handwoven from bamboo, reinforced with split rattan, and finished in deep black lacquer, it rests upon a carved wooden base and is adorned with five gilded cartouches painted in traditional Lanna (Tai Tham) script. Rather than forming a continuous prayer, each inscription repeats the same protective gatha, invoking the Triple Gem to bless the harvest, guard the grain from pests and decay, and ensure the vessel remains abundantly filled. More than a storage container, it embodies the enduring belief that prosperity, nourishment, and spiritual well-being are inseparable parts of daily life.
Translation: “By the sacred power of the Buddha, this vessel is protected from decay and harm. May the food stored within multiply in abundance, bringing continuous wealth, security, and good fortune to this home.”
