Antique Chinese Iron-Bound Wood Grain Measuring Bucket

SKU: 3115

Dating to the late Qing Dynasty and early Republican period, this Chinese grain bucket, or Dou (斗), reflects the precision and integrity that once governed traditional agricultural trade. Handcrafted from fitted wooden staves and reinforced with hand-forged iron straps, it served as a standardized measure for grain in local marketplaces. Ink inscriptions beneath the base preserve its remarkable provenance, identifying the original owner, Zhang Liuchuan, an official certification mark confirming its approved capacity, and the workshop, Guang Sheng Ji, where it was crafted. Bearing the rich patina of decades of honest use, this humble vessel endures as a tangible reminder of China’s commercial traditions, where skilled craftsmanship and trust formed the foundation of everyday exchange.

Translated Writings: “Manufactured by the Guang Sheng Shop, officially certified for standard legal volume, and owned by Zhang Liuchuan.”
