Antique Tibetan Giltwood Kirtimukha Frieze

SKU: 3237

Carved in the Himalayan Buddhist tradition during the late 19th or early 20th century, this architectural panel once adorned a sacred space where symbolism and craftsmanship were inseparable. At its center is the fierce guardian Kirtimukha, revered as a powerful protector that devours negativity and wards off evil influences. Surrounded by deeply carved auspicious cloud motifs, the figure emerges from a vibrant field of cinnabar-red lacquer with remnants of brilliant gold gilding. Likely positioned above a temple doorway or shrine, the panel served as both an architectural ornament and a spiritual guardian. Its beautifully weathered surface and richly layered patina preserve the enduring artistry and devotional heritage of Tibetan Buddhist woodcarving.
