Reflecting the refined craftsmanship of traditional Chinese furniture, this circa 1850 low table from the Fujian Province is crafted from rare Jichimu hardwood and features a richly patinated surface with beautifully carved architectural details. Originally acquired from Shanghai Guyi Antiques, the low form traditionally used atop raised platforms translates naturally into a distinctive contemporary coffee table. The relief-carved apron is decorated with scrolling vines, floral blossoms, and a central key-fret motif, while substantial cabriole legs terminate in finely carved guardian lions, each resting a paw upon an embroidered ball. Traditional coin motifs add auspicious symbolism associated with prosperity and good fortune, while mitered panel construction, mortise-and-tenon joinery, and heavy transverse supports reveal the quality of its traditional craftsmanship. Natural wear and a deep aged patina beautifully preserve its 19th-century character and history.
Acquired through Shanghai Guyi Antique Furniture Co. Ltd., Shanghai, China. Accompanied by the original company-stamped invoice dated March 13, 2004, documented the item’s age, wood species, and origin.
