Antique Burmese Giltwood Statue of Shin Upagutta (Mandalay Period)

SKU: 3445

Seated in quiet meditation, this exceptional 19th-century Burmese giltwood sculpture depicts Shin Upagutta, the revered Buddhist arahant traditionally associated with absolute protection and the safeguarding of the faith. His distinctive upward gaze and graceful gesture into the thabeik, or monastic alms bowl, are characteristic elements of his iconography. Masterfully hand-carved from solid teak wood, the figure retains remarkable traces of its original red thit-see lacquer and genuine gold-leaf gilding, now beautifully weathered through generations of devotional use. Natural flaking, rubbing, and historic losses reveal the richly textured timber beneath, providing a magnificent, untouched patina and an authentic, deeply aged character. A carved Mon-Burmese donor inscription runs along the pedestal base, while the underside preserves an exceedingly rare, intact square wooden consecration plug—extraordinary evidence of the sacred chamber permanently sealed within the base. Standing at an impressive 28 inches in height, these superb details make this a compelling, museum-grade exemplar of Mandalay-period Buddhist art.
