Lambani Banjara Gala Patch

SKU: 3005

This vintage Lambani Banjara gala patch originates from the nomadic Lambani (Banjara) communities of India, where such textiles formed part of everyday dress and protective adornment. Hand-embroidered on madder-dyed cotton, it is richly embellished with shisha mirrors and cowrie shells, materials long associated with apotropaic protection and the deflection of the “evil eye.” Traditionally worn at the nape of the neck while carrying vessels, the patch reflects both practical use and symbolic meaning. Today, it is often preserved as decorative textile art or repurposed in contemporary fashion contexts.

Clayton and Deb have an interesting story behind these unusual Banjara embroidery patches. While the Korver family was traveling through India, everyone decided to spend some time relaxing by the pool after so much traveling. Clayton, however, couldn’t quite sit still and went out for a drive instead. Along the roadside, he spotted women selling colorful handmade textiles, and several immediately caught his eye. Embroidered with intricate patterns, cowrie shells—once used as currency in many cultures—and tiny pieces of mirror, each patch has its own character. Their unusual beauty and craftsmanship made them impossible to pass up.
