Pair of Chinese Famille Verte “Mallot” Baluster Vases

SKU: 3080

This magnificent pair of Qing Dynasty Chinese Famille Verte vases commands attention through its monumental scale, intricate aquatic imagery, and exceptional decorative craftsmanship. Each vase is carefully shaped with a distinctive three-tiered baluster form, creating multiple surfaces for the elaborate underwater scene to unfold. Lively carp swim among curling pond grasses, lotus blossoms, and layered aquatic foliage, with each scale, fin, and petal individually defined in fine overglaze linework. The traditional Famille Verte palette of rich greens, iron-reds, aubergines, and warm yellows gives the composition remarkable depth and movement. Molded guardian-lion handles add sculptural dimension to the necks, while geometric key-fret borders frame the upper rims. Both bases bear the four-character mark 康熙年製 (Kangxi Nian Zhi), translated as “Made during the Kangxi Reign,” connecting these impressive vessels to one of China’s most celebrated porcelain traditions and the enduring influence of the Kangxi era.

Provenance

Acquired in Scottsdale and Paradise Valley, Arizona, in March 2003, through Pearson’s Antiques & Imports, Scottsdale, Arizona. Original two-page purchase documentation, dated March 18, 2003 and signed by Jackie Pearson, identifies the piece as a Middle to Late Qing Dynasty (18th-19th century) and notes that it is signed on the bottom. The documentation further records that the purchasers were accompanied during their travels in China by “Granny,” described as a person who worked for the Chinese government and advised them on their acquisitions. Original supporting documentation retained by the owner

Clayton and Deb have a wonderful story behind these remarkable fish vases. While in Scottsdale, Arizona, for a board meeting, they wandered into a shop and immediately fell in love with the pair. At the time, they weren’t experts in this type of porcelain—they simply loved the colors, the workmanship, and how unique the vases felt. Sometimes, as Clayton says, you just know when you see something special. As it turned out, they made a fantastic purchase.
