Gracefully proportioned and rich in symbolism, this 19th-century Chinese Official’s Hat chair (Guanmaoyi) embodies the refined elegance of traditional Ming-style furniture. Handcrafted from elmwood using classic mortise-and-tenon joinery, its sweeping arms and gently curved back offer both comfort and visual balance. The broad back splat is centered by an intricately carved dragon medallion, an enduring symbol of strength, protection, and imperial authority. A deep reddish-brown lacquer finish has mellowed into a warm, authentic patina, while generations of use have left honest wear across the seat and footrest, enhancing its character. Equally suited as a functional chair or sculptural accent, it reflects the enduring craftsmanship and timeless beauty of Chinese furniture traditions.
