Crafted during the Mandalay period of 19th-century Burma, this monumental sadaik manuscript chest reflects the deep spiritual and artistic traditions of Burmese monastic culture. Traditionally used to safeguard sacred Buddhist Kammavaca manuscripts, the chest is richly adorned with cinnabar lacquer, molded thayo relief work, and delicate gold leaf detailing depicting courtly figures and scenes inspired by the Jataka tales—the previous lives of the Buddha. Constructed from solid teak and elevated upon its original tiered stand, the piece embodies both ceremonial importance and masterful craftsmanship. The richly aged lacquer surface, softened gilding, and accompanying silk textile preserve the quiet grandeur and devotional artistry of historic Burmese temple furnishings.
