A remarkable survivor from the French Third Republic, this Model 1872/1874 Cuirassier helmet embodies the grandeur and precision of nineteenth-century French heavy cavalry equipment. Its polished steel skull is crowned by an ornate gilded brass comb, centered by a finely sculpted Medusa mask and accented with a flaming grenade and laurel insignia. The flowing black horsehair tail and scarlet wool marmouset add dramatic character to its military silhouette. Particularly compelling are the original arsenal and serial stampings preserved on the rear of the skull, including 1111, 55, and 77, accompanied by additional period maker or inspector marks beneath the crest finial. Original leather, brass fittings, and naturally aged steel further preserve the helmet’s history of military service and craftsmanship.
